[tweetmeme source=”LilBizBigWorld” only_single=false] American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault, had just announced that his company will start promoting Small Business Saturday. This is for the support of small business owners and will start on November 27, 2010.

First Came Black Friday

Black Friday occurs between the 23rd and the 29th of November and this marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. Although Black Friday is not an official holiday, this day is still considered to be the busiest shopping day of the year as most employees are given the day off in celebration of Thanksgiving. Black Friday also extends to businesses who operate mainly through the internet. Customers can expect a lot of promotions and discounts during this day online as well as offline.

Then Came Cyber Monday

Since there are a lot of consumers shopping around and getting the best deals on Black Friday, the National Retail Federation saw the need for an extension of the shopping bonanza. In essence, those who were not able to shop around on Black Friday can get the bargains they want online the monday after.

Small Business Saturday

Since Black Friday and Cyber Monday does not necessarily mean that shoppers get goods from local mom and pop businesses, Mayor Bloomberg and Kenneth Chenault saw this as an opportunity for small businesses to gain more traction. In today’s dog-eat-dog world, it is an encouraging thought that small businesses are given equal footing with the bigger players when it comes to enticing consumers.
